This University of Texas research project examines how gender is performed in blues dance competition and performance. The primary method of research is the conduction of a series of short interviews with national blues dance competitors, performers, and teachers, to be completed in the Fall of 2014. Elements of gender performance include costume, movement aesthetic, and character. Furthermore, this research explores how movement, costume, and partnering dynamics relate to our gender identities and gender norms. The purpose of this research is to continue developing a conversation in the national blues dance community about gender in dance.
